The competency test, an important tool for ensuring the quality of education

competentietesten onderwijs hrmforce   The competency test for education is a valuable tool in primary and secondary education (PO and VO). It helps provide insight into the competencies of teachers and instructors. These insights are important for the recruitment and selection of (beginning) teachers and career changers, as well as for the professional development of current staff.

Competence in Various Areas

Since August 2017, new competency requirements have been in effect for teachers, based on the BIO Act (Professions in Education). These requirements are more specific, easier to assess, and aligned with professional standards. Teachers are expected to be competent in three main areas: subject matter, subject-specific pedagogy, and pedagogical practice. These areas encompass several behavioral indicators, including interpersonal skills, organizational skills, collaboration, reflection, and professional development. It is essential for both new and experienced teachers to have insight into their competency development. That is why the use of competency tests in education is on the rise-in career development, performance reviews, and as input for training and development programs.

Competency Tests as an Effective Tool

A competency test is a structured method for gaining insight into professional skills. Participants answer questions that provide insight into their strengths and areas for improvement. This helps them work toward growth in a targeted manner, for example through coaching or training. Unlike a talent test, a competency test primarily measures current performance and development potential within a specific job context.

The SBL Competencies

The SBL competencies were developed by the Foundation for Professional Quality in Teaching (SBL) and are part of the BIO Act. They form the basis for many assessment and development tools in education. Hrmforce uses these competencies in assessments and training programs for the education sector. This enables schools to make targeted selections and invest in staff development.

The 7 SBL competencies are:

  1. Interpersonal Competence
  2. Pedagogical competence
  3. Subject-matter and teaching competence
  4. Organizational competence
  5. Competent in collaborating with colleagues
  6. Competent in collaborating with the community
  7. Competent in reflection and professional development

The Difference Between Competency and Talent

A competency can be developed-you can strengthen skills and behaviors through practice, feedback, and training. A talent, on the other hand, is often seen as innate potential. A competency test therefore focuses on a person’s current suitability for a specific role or context. It offers practical guidance for development. A talent test is more focused on discovering natural aptitudes and preferences.

A Quality Boost for Education

By using competency tests, schools can specifically enhance the quality of their education. They recruit and select based on relevant criteria and support teachers in their professional growth. This increases staff motivation and contributes to better education for students.
