Teacher Professional Development

Competentieontwikkeling leerkrachten hrmforce Since August 2017, teachers in primary (PO), secondary (VO), and vocational secondary education (MBO) have been required to meet legally established competency requirements. These requirements lay the foundation for professional quality in education. They serve not only as guidelines for those who wish to become teachers, but also as a compass for experienced teachers who want to continue their professional development. The focus is on three pillars: subject matter, subject-specific teaching methods, and pedagogical practice.

A Solid Foundation for Quality in Education

The more stringent requirements clarify what is expected of a teacher. They have been translated into seven specific competencies:
  • Interpersonal competence
  • Pedagogical competence
  • Subject-matter and instructional competence
  • Organizational competence
  • Competent in collaborating with colleagues
  • Competent in collaborating with the community
  • Competent in reflection and professional development
These competencies apply to both teachers in training and teachers who have been teaching for years. In the latter case, we refer to “competency maintenance”: maintaining and further developing professional standards.

Self-analysis as a starting point for development

For teachers who want to improve-or who notice that certain skills are lagging-it’s important to start with an honest self-analysis. Where are the strengths? What still needs attention? Only once you have clarity about your own profile can you develop in a targeted way. A competency assessment is a powerful tool for this. It provides insight into where someone stands and offers practical guidance for next steps-both individually and within the team.

A profession that demands more than just knowledge

The requirements for a good teacher extend beyond subject knowledge or teaching skills. How you interact with your students, colleagues, and parents is just as crucial to success. That makes the profession multifaceted-but also demanding. Personal development is, of course, an integral part of this.

Example: Interpersonal and reflective competence

Interpersonal competence is about interacting with students in an open, respectful, and positive manner. A good teacher senses what a student needs, sets boundaries, and builds trust. Reflection is just as important: being able to learn from experiences, take feedback seriously, and act on it-that is the foundation for growth. Both competencies say a lot about how someone approaches life as a person and as a professional.

Tailored Development-Practical and Goal-Oriented

Hrmforce offers schools a practical way to map out and guide competency development. Through a personality questionnaire and assessment, the seven teaching competencies are mapped out both individually and from a team perspective. The report clearly indicates:
  • Where are the strengths?
  • In which areas is development desirable?
  • How does the profile align with the role?
This prevents mismatches, promotes team dynamics, and helps schools invest more strategically in their people. And just as important: it motivates teachers to continue working on their own development with enthusiasm.
“Motivated and satisfied teachers have a positive influence on students’ motivation and academic performance.”
