The customs declarant works with strict deadlines around filing periods and carries personal responsibility for the accuracy of declarations. The distinction from a shipping employee lies in specialist knowledge of customs law and tariff codes. Selection often fails on candidates with logistics experience who underestimate the detailed knowledge of customs coding, which can lead to costly back charges.
