Structural Engineer

Also known as: Structural designer

Calculates and designs the load bearing structure of buildings and tests it against strength requirements, standards and material behaviour.

The structural engineer works closely with the architect and installation advisor and carries personal responsibility for the safety of the structure. The distinction from an architect lies in the focus on strength and stability rather than form and experience. Selection often fails on candidates with strong calculation skill who cannot adequately explain to non-technical parties why a change is or is not possible.
