Selects and applies statistical methods to research questions, guards the underlying assumptions and accounts for the reliability of results.
The statistician is accountable for the methodological soundness of analyses and for distinguishing a found correlation from a demonstrable effect. Unlike the data scientist, predictive power is not the goal, but the validity of the conclusion and the reproducibility of the method. Selection emphasises software packages, while the bottleneck is substantive: holding on to a methodological objection at the moment a sponsor has already announced an outcome.
