Architect

Also known as: Building architect

Designs buildings and outdoor spaces, translates client wishes into a coherent design and safeguards that design through the whole build process.

The architect works from first sketch to handover and must be both creative and technically grounded. The distinction from a structural engineer lies in overall responsibility for design and spatial quality rather than strength. Selection often fails on portfolios that convince aesthetically but show little about the ability to deliver a design within budget and regulation.
