Cost Engineer

Also known as: Cost Estimator · Cost Controller

Estimates and monitors the costs of technical projects, compares budget with actual spending and flags cost overruns during execution.

The cost engineer works at the intersection of engineering and finance and translates technical scope into cost, from materials to labour hours. Unlike a business controller, they focus on a specific project or investment rather than ongoing business results. Selection often looks at numerical skill, while flagging an impending overrun early to a project leader who would rather push on than admit the problem makes the difference to the project's final outcome in practice.
