Data Architect

Also known as: Enterprise Data Architect · Information Architect

Designs the coherence of data, models and platforms in an organisation and sets standards that build teams adhere to.

The data architect determines how data flows through the organisation, where the source of truth sits and which models and definitions are leading. Unlike the data engineer, this role does not build, and unlike the data steward it addresses structure rather than day to day quality and ownership. Selection gets stuck on platform depth, while the real criterion is whether someone makes choices that last five years and can be explained to teams that want something else in the short term.
