Software Architect

Determines the structure of applications and their coherence, weighs technical options and records choices and constraints for the build teams.

The software architect chooses the layout of a system, the separation between components and the constraints that build teams follow. Unlike the lead developer, this role does not steer today's code but the durability of the whole across several years and several teams. Selection leans heavily on technical depth, while the bottleneck is explaining and defending choices to non-technical decision makers and resisting the pull to start building again.
