Manages storage systems and backup facilities, monitors retention periods and ensures that recovery after data loss demonstrably works.
The storage and backup administrator is responsible for capacity and restorability of data and for the agreements on retention periods. Unlike the system administrator, the field is narrow and the consequence of a mistake is large, because a problem only surfaces at the moment recovery is needed. Selection targets experience with specific storage products, while the distinguishing criterion is test discipline: a backup never restored is an assumption, and organisations almost always discover that at the worst possible moment.
