Public Information Officer

Also known as: Government Press Officer · Public Affairs Officer

Informs citizens and press on behalf of a government body about policy and decisions, answers media questions and prepares officials for public appearances.

The public information officer translates government policy into understandable information for citizens and media and ensures communication is factually correct and timely. Unlike a corporate spokesperson, this role works within the framework of open government and must actively share uncomfortable information too. Selection often looks at writing skill, while timely informing the press on a sensitive file before it leaks through another channel is what makes the difference in practice between control and a crisis.
